It Only Took 50 Days

Amazon notified me on 1st August that they had shipped me my copy of Acheron. I know New Zealand is on the other side of the world, but surely it shouldn't have taken FIFTY days to get here? I'd basically given up hope it was ever going to turn up.

Now I have to decide what to read next, as I'd taken it out of my mental "next up reads" schedule.

And by the way, why do American publishers so often finish their hardcovers so shoddily?

I think that the ragged edges are a stylistic choice -- you see paperbacks like that too sometimes, but usually there's a definite wave pattern if you look at the pages edge-on. I kinda like it.

Most of my hardcovers look like that.

I'm interested to see what you think of the book. It's such a milestone in the series.

I was wondering if it was a stylistic choice or just plain shoddy workmanship as well - a couple of my hardcovers have edges like that too. I'd rather have a clean finish personally!

50 days? I will never complain about waiting more than a week for an Amazon order ever again.

The rough edges are known as deckle edges, it's supposed to be a throwback to the time when paper was made by hand. I like it, but the first time I saw it I thought something had gone wrong at the publisher! It's become a huge trend with books -- three of the six books I'm reading right now have it.

I always assumed they were supposed to be like that to give the pages texture and to keep you from getting papercuts as easily.
